Bell Fund launches OnLine to OnTV digital fund

The Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund has launched a new funding program for adapting digital media projects to broadcast TV and new audiences.

Through the OnLine to OnTV program, projects will receive a grant of up to 100% of approved pre-development expenses, to a maximum of $10,000.

The program will fund early stage development of existing and successful digital media projects, including web series, games and e-books, to create pitch materials and strategies that show the project’s viability for traditional TV.

OnLine to OnTV is designed to support digital media producers who do not have significant relevant TV production experience by partnering them with an experienced TV company to create the broadcast pitch materials.

“Digital media is a fertile source for television content and optioning,” said Catherine Warren, Bell Fund board communications chair and FanTrust Entertainment Strategies president, in a statement. “But packaging and pitching to broadcasters, securing development deals and the rest of the heavy-lifting needed to transition to ‘television-readiness’ requires dedicated effort, which our new grant aims to support.”

The program will accept applications on Feb. 1 and Oct. 1 in 2014.

Separately, the Bell Fund has also extended its TV Development Digital Pilot Program, a grant program which it launched last year for producers and broadcasters to test potential new TV concepts online and on mobile devices. The fund allocated approximately $1 million for the program, and since October 2012, 15 projects have received funding through the program.

The Bell Fund is also among the five partnering Canadian funding agencies to launch a revised digital media coproduction framework this week.
