CBC journalist Melissa Fung is reportedly on her way back to Canada following her release on Saturday after 28 days in captivity in Afghanistan.
Fung was abducted Oct. 12 while on assignment in Kabul, working on a story about conditions in a refugee camp. International media kept news of her capture a secret while negotiations were underway for her release.
‘In the interest of Melissa’s safety and that of other working journalists in the region, on the advice of security experts, we made the decision to ask media colleagues not to publish news of her abduction,’ said CBC News publisher John Cruickshank in a release.
Meanwhile, the federal government on Monday denied reports that Taliban prisoners were set free in exchange for Fung’s release. The 35-year-old Vancouver native was blindfolded and held in a tiny cave several meters below ground. She was reportedly kidnapped by a criminal gang, and it is not clear if the Taliban was involved.
