Lionsgate producing Deadbeat for Hulu

As Lionsgate continues its expansion into the TV space, streaming service Hulu has tapped the Canadian mini-studio to produce new supernatural comedy series Deadbeat.

Deadbeat, the latest original series from Hulu, marks the first coproduction for Lionsgate and the streaming service.

Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment will produce the 10-episode half-hour series, co-created and written by Cody Heller and Brett Konner, of FX’s Wilfred series.

Deadbeat follows a New York man helping ghosts with their unfinished business, according to a release.

Flight of the Conchords exec producer Troy Miller has been tapped to direct and exec produce Deadbeat through his Hollywood-based production company Dakota Pictures.

From Plan B, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Sarah Esberg will produce.

Production is slated to begin this fall, with Deadbeat to be distributed via Hulu and Hulu Plus in 2014.

“This fun, edgy and provocative series is a perfect fit for Hulu’s audience and an exciting expansion of Lionsgate’s programming across digital platforms,” said Lionsgate Television Group president Kevin Beggs in a statement.

Deadbeat is the latest series to launch as part of Hulu’s expanding slate of original series. It recently launched the comedy western Quick Draw and the animated series The Awesomes.

Hulu has also picked up animated Canuck series Fugget About It, 9 Story Entertainment’s first primetime project, and the upcoming Mother Up!, from Bardel Entertainment and Breakthrough Entertainment, for exclusive runs in the U.S.
