Pop culture and Polar Regions are on the marquee at sea for the inaugural Floating Polar Film Festival, slated to begin Nov. 2, 2013.

Last August, Canadian documentary festival Hot Docs partnered with travel company Quark Expeditions to launch the festival, a curated documentary program playing aboard a luxury arctic cruise ship.

Now, Quark Expeditions is rolling out the inaugural festival lineup, which will screen aboard the company’s Sea Spirit ship during a 23-day Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica voyage.

The Floating Polar Film Festival will screen eight films, including Jeff Orlowski’s Chasing Ice, which follows renowned National Geographic photographer James Balog as he captures a multi-year record of the world’s glaciers during an Arctic expedition; Daniel Dencik’s journey to the North Pole, Expedition to the End of the World; Andreas M. Dalsgaard’s The Human Scale; and Jillian Schlesinger’s Maidentrip.

Also screening are Joe Berlinger’s Under African Skies, investigating the political criticism around Paul Simon’s Graceland album in 1986; Sarah Gavron’s portrait of an isolated Greenlandic village, Village at the End of the World; Ben Nabors’ William and the Windmill; and Sebastian Junger’s Which Way is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington. Filmmaker and photographer Hetherington was killed by a mortar attack in Libya in 2011. Out of questions about and reflecting on Hetherington’s death, his friend and Restrepo co-director Junger made the 77-minute film, which had its world premiere at Sundance in January.

Curated by Hot Docs, the lineup reflects passengers’ love of adventure, the environment, globalization, the Polar Regions and pop culture, the organization said.

“From witnessing the dramatic consequences of climate change to experiencing a solo sailing voyage around the globe through the eyes of a teenager, the inaugural Floating Polar Film Festival will appeal to their sense of adventure and curiosity about the world,” said Hot Docs executive director Brett Hendrie in a statement.

Additionally, Hot Docs programming manager Sarafina DiFelice will introduce the films and guide passengers through their festival experience on board the Quark expedition.
