D Films has snapped up the Canadian rights to actor/director Richard Ayoade’s The Double, a comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska about an insignificant man driven to near breakdown after seeing his doppelganger.
The Canadian indie plans a winter 2014 release for the indie pic from U.K.-based Protagonist Pictures that is booked for a world premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.
Ayoade’s second feature after Submarine is based on the Dostoyevsky novella of the same name, and also follows the British director’s comedic starring roles in TV shows like The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to work with Protagonist again, especially on such an inspiring and original piece of filmmaking,” said Michael Robson, vice president of marketing and development of D Films.
The Canadian distributor also released domestically Paddy Considine’s directorial debut Tyrannosaur from Protagonist Pictures.
