CNN newsman and former CHUM mainstay John Roberts will be inducted into the Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame next year, nodding to his recent reporting for the U.S. network and his earlier work in news and music in New York and Toronto.
Currently the co-host of CNN’s American Morning, the three-time Emmy winner is probably best remembered by many Canadians for his early work with MuchMusic and its then-sister Citytv in Toronto. Known at the time as J.D. Roberts, the Toronto native was for many years on the leading edge of music and entertainment reporting at the CHUM outlets, co-hosting The NewMusic with Jeanne Beker through the early ’80s and doubling as one of the first VJs on MuchMusic when it launched in 1984.
Roberts jumped to CBS in 1989, working for Miami’s WCIX and WCBS in New York before moving on to CNN in 2006. He has scored three Emmy Awards — for his coverage of the Atlanta Olympic bombing, the death of Princess Diana and the TWA 800 crash in 1996.
Roberts will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Toronto on March 12, as part of the Canadian Music Week festival.
