Imax Corp and Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment announced Thursday that the upcoming film Divergent will be digitally re-mastered into Imax format and released in Imax theatres worldwide on March 21, 2014.
Divergent is the first installment of the action-adventure trilogy based on Victoria Roth’s teen novels, which were New York Times best sellers. The film is directed by Neil Bruger (The Illusionist), and stars Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Kate Winslet (The Reader).
With Divergent, Lionsgate and Imax continue their string of recent ventures turning young adult book series into blockbuster movie franchises, such as Summit’s The Twilight Saga series, which grossed more than $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office.
Similarly, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games‘ first film was the 13th highest-grossing North American release of all time, according to a release from Lionsgate and Imax. The film was released in Imax theatres on March 23, 2012 in Canada and the U.S.
Hoping to recreate the Hunger Games‘ success, Divergent will be released theatrically in North America around the same time, on Friday, March 21, 2014.
