It was a party on New Year’s Eve for TSN, which saw record-breaking audiences for a preliminary match between Canada and the U.S. at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships.
The highly anticipated game in Ottawa nabbed 1.6 million viewers, peaking at two million from 9:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. as Team Canada defeated the U.S. 7-4. The game eclipsed the previous preliminary round high in 2005/06 by 19% and was the most-watched program on Canadian television on New Year’s Eve, according to BBM Nielsen. (All numbers 2+.)
At press time, the gold and bronze medal matches were still to come Monday, with Canada taking on Sweden for gold, while Slovakia and Russia battle it out for bronze. Canada looks to win its fifth gold medal at the World Juniors.
In all, TSN boasts 28 World Junior games with more than one million viewers since the specialty began broadcasting the popular holiday event in 1991.
