Industry members gathered at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Thursday night for the CFC’s Payback Awards.
The Payback Awards recognize outstanding volunteers for their contributions to CFC productions and training. Playback joined the CFC for the 14th year to spotlight the volunteers for their work. Editor Matt Sylvain represented the publication at the event.
Set Shuter received an award for her work as the digital media technician (DMT) on three of this year’s CFC short films. That work included a three-hour daily commute from Waterloo, plus intra-GTA travel for her DMT duties, which included creating audio/video file-based content for the production team.
Courtney Bruneau, described as “diligent, very focused and a real team player,” as a best boy electric also worked on three of this year’s shorts and the CFC’s Actor’s Close Ups earlier this year.
Eric Tesainer received the third award for his work as a production assistant on this year’s shorts, plus on five other CFC projects over the last year. Whether driving crew around in horrible traffic or dressing craft tables beautifully, he is described as “unflappable and extremely dependable.”
And Jamie Gould, project manager for Deluxe post-production sound received the Payback Industry Award.
“No matter how tense things can get, Jamie created a warm and welcoming environment of learning for our filmmakers, convincing all of us that he can solve any challenges that comes his way,” the CFC said.
Also Thursday, the CFC screened the films from its 2013 Short Dramatic films program.
The coming-of-age short Anatomy of Assistance is co-written and directed by Cory Bowles, Lauren Corber as producer, John Titley as co-writer and Jordan Crute as editor.
Cold Feet, about a delicatessen worker, who, wanting to make a name for himself, takes on a tricky task for his boss, is written and directed by Daniel D’Alimonte. John Ainslie and John Titley are also on board as writers, with Lyvia Cohen as producer and Jordan Crute as editor.
Lunchbox Loser, about an aspiring stand-up comedienne who seeks to win over the lunchroom crowd, is directed by Virginia Abramovich and produced by Lauren Corber and Ani Baravyan. Chandler Levack is writer, with Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux as editor.
And We Wanted More, written and directed by Stephen Dunn, is a psychological thriller about a singer who loses her voice at the height of her first world tour. The film is produced by Jennifer Shin, written by Margaret Lester and edited by Bryan Atkinson.
