3D systems precede Jonas movie

Cineplex is upgrading an additional 22 theaters with 3D technology over the next few weeks, with plans to have the technology in place for the highly anticipated Feb. 27 release of Disney’s Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.

Theaters that will be able to show movies in 3D for the first time include locations in Vancouver, Kelowna, Regina, Edmonton and Ottawa, while Toronto’s Sheppard Grande and Odeon Eglinton Town Centre will also be upgraded. These upgrades are on top of the 3D systems that were added to the chain last year.

The move brings the total number of 3D screens from 46 to 68 as of the end of February. The Jonas Brothers concert film is likely to break records for Disney, based on the popularity of last year’s Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which raked in $65 million in North America, according to Box Office Mojo.

‘Based on guest feedback and questions and the popularity of the band, we would expect that it would do great, especially amongst teenagers and tweens,’ says Cineplex spokesperson Georgia Sourtzis. Jonas Brothers will be shown in 20 of the 22 new 3D theaters in addition to other locations.

The number of 3D movies being released in 2009 has doubled to 12 versus last year, with other upcoming titles including Monsters vs. Aliens, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and James Cameron’s Avatar.

Meanwhile, Cineplex is offering a one-night-only special screening of The Who: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival on Feb. 18 at select locations. The concert was originally shot on film in 1970 by Oscar winner Murray Lerner and showcases the band’s memorable performance in front of 600,000 festival-goers. The footage has been digitally restored in HD.
