HALIFAX — Sorcery Films has inked a deal with U.S. entertainment giant Starz to air and distribute Zombiemania, its 2007 doc on the undead. The film, which features an interview with horror godfather George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead) on the enduring appeal of the zombie, aired previously on Space.

Space also has Sorcery’s next venture into horror and will debut Pretty Bloody: The Women of Horror, on Feb. 25. The sci-fi cable channel is the first-window broadcaster, with Rogers Cable Fund, Film Nova Scotia and the provincial and federal tax credits bringing the funding for the doc.

It’s an examination of the women who make a living in horror entertainment, including actors, writers and directors.

‘We hope the film will dispel some of the myths surrounding women and horror,’ says Donna Davies, Pretty Bloody director and co-owner of Sorcery Films, which specializes in documentaries on the supernatural and culture. ‘Women have actually had a huge influence on the genre, and not just as the helpless victim running from the monster… Times have changed — there are a lot more female horror fans these days. Female fans want to see well-developed storylines with strong female leads that kick butt.’

Other projects in the Sorcery pipeline include contributions to VisionTV’s doc anthology series Supernatural Investigator that will air March 3, 25 and May 12.
