Guy Maddin has begun work on his next project, and this month will start shooting the short film Night Mayor. The film is being produced through the National Film Board and, according to a brief statement issued Wednesday, will also mark the board’s 70th anniversary.
The NFB said little about the project, but for the title and that it will start production in Maddin’s hometown and muse, Winnipeg, on Monday.
‘When Maddin was approached by the NFB to create an original work for the anniversary, he immersed himself into the country’s film heritage inside the NFB’s vast archives,’ said the board. ‘What he has envisioned is an imaginative cinematic riff on the significance of a public film producer.’
Night Mayor is produced by Joe MacDonald (Cosmic Current, They Live to Polka) out of the NFB’s Prairie Centre in Winnipeg
