Toronto sees 2012 total production spending rise

Toronto saw $1.19 billion in total production activity in 2012, up 5.9% from 2011 levels and the second year in a row overall budgetary expenditures reached over the $1 billion mark.

That finding came from a presentation Monday to the Toronto’s economic development committee at City Hall.

Major productions, especially on the film and TV side, accounted for $1.01 billion in total spending last year, up 5.96% from expenditures of $957.8 million in 2011.

On the commercial production front, total spending was virtually unchanged at $98.2 million in 2012, and animation budget expenditures were up 12% to $81 million.

Domestic production reached $500 million for the first time, increasing by 17% from 2011 levels, according to the city report.

“The level and variety of success experienced by Toronto’s screen based industry in 2012 is phenomenal,” councillor Michael Thompson, chair of the economic development committee, said of the city’s ability to attract local and foreign producers to shoot in the city.
