Re: ‘CRTC boss unmoved at hearings’ (Playback Daily, Feb. 17):The ongoing CRTC hearings on new media are a positive opportunity for Canada’s creative community to put forth concrete proposals to ensure a place online for Canadian content. Despite the characterization in [your] news article, commissioners were engaged and intrigued by ACTRA’s bold proposals.

The very purpose of these hearings is to explore online Canadian programming at a time of increasing Internet use by Canadians. In fact, in his opening speech, Konrad von Finckenstein, CRTC chairman, said, ‘We must respect the principles of openness and individual choice that govern the Internet while maintaining access to, and for, Canadian stories, opinions and ideas.’

It is unfortunate that rather than focus on the presenters’ recommendations, [your] news article was simply a series of sensationalized quotes that fail to accurately describe the hearing in a balanced and informed manner. Stephen Waddell,

National executive director, ACTRA
