Making good on its promise (or, depending on your point of view, its threat) to cut costs at its A channels, CTVgm is chopping 118 jobs, more than a quarter of the mini-network’s total workforce. The cuts include cancellation of the morning news shows in Victoria, London and Barrie, and the 6 p.m. and 11p.m. newscasts in Ottawa.

+ Despite its butt-numbing runtime, Steven Soderbergh’s four-hour Che rang up a surprising $23,100 per screen following its release in Toronto through E1 Films. Viva la revolucion!

Offering a rare peek at ad revenue-challenged CTV, minority investor Torstar Corp. has written down the value of its 20% stake in CTVglobemedia by a third. Blaming the economic slump and ‘the challenges of conventional television in particular,’ the parent company of The Toronto Star recorded a $95.7-million write-down on its CTVgm investment to $200 million.

+ Outdoorsy cable channel OLN is only allowed to fill 5% of its yearly schedule with ‘drama and comedy’ programs, but its owners at Rogers have asked the CRTC to bump that figure up a wee bit – to 25%. Rogers has also asked for permission to air ‘stick and ball’ sports and all stripes of comedy – including sitcoms, sketch, improv and stand-up. As long as the jokes are told outside, presumably?
