France cheers Cronenberg

David Cronenberg has been named to the Legion of Honor and will be inducted into the order, France’s highest commendation, next month in Toronto.

Cronenberg will be made a chevalier, the lowest of the five ranks in the Legion d’honneur, in a ceremony on April 1, hosted by French consul general Jérôme Cauchard. The honor will be presented by the French ambassador, François Delattre.

The celebrated filmmaker, whose movies have been well-received in France over the years, joins a select group of non-French citizens admitted to the legion in recognition of their contribution to French ideals; in this case, French culture and the country’s ties with Canada.

Other filmmakers admitted to the legion include Laurence Olivier, Akira Kurosawa and Clint Eastwood.

Cronenberg and his Toronto office are withholding comment until the big day. He is currently at work on the MGM spy thriller The Matarese Circle.
