Bob and Doug are back, minus Bob

Bob and Doug McKenzie will return to Canadian airwaves next month, part of Global’s Sunday night cartoon lineup — though both Rick Moranis and Fox have backed off from the project.

The 22-episode series Bob & Doug, which revives the slow-witted hosers made famous by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis in the early ’80s, will air in early primetime at 7:30 p.m. beginning April 19, leading in to the usual Global laughers The Simpsons and Family Guy. The new series features voices of Thomas and comedian Dave Coulier (Full House), who steps in for Moranis.

Moranis was expected to voice the series alongside Thomas when it was unveiled last year. He will instead exec produce Bob & Doug with his longtime partner, joined by producer Patricia Burns. The show is produced through a numbered company in Toronto and PIP Animation in Ottawa.

Fox also showed interest in the series last summer, though a Global spokesperson now says the U.S. network ‘is not involved at this time.’

The show, set in the fictional Canuck town of Maple Lake, follows the brothers through scenarios similar to those of their ‘Great White North’ skits on SCTV. The new series’ voice cast includes Patrick McKenna, Derek McGrath, Ron Pardo, Jayne Eastwood and Ho Chow.

Bob & Doug builds on the hilarity of the Canadian cult classic while offering viewers a fresh animated look at these beloved characters,’ commented Canwest’s Christine Shipton in a release.
