Tremblant fest cancelled

The recession has hit another film festival, following word that the Festival du Film de Tremblant has dropped what would have been its fourth edition. The fest was due to return to the Quebec resort town in June, but said Wednesday that its partners had pulled their funding because of budget cuts brought on by the economic slump.

The indie festival is not necessarily dead, however. Organizers say they hope to bring it back in 2010, and are in talks with stakeholders, ‘in order not to lose the capital of expertise, enthusiasm and the brand value earned in the past four years.’

The Canadian Film Fest in Toronto pointed a finger in the same direction when it recently announced that it had nixed its sixth edition.

‘Corporate sponsorship has been drying up [and] it has been especially difficult to secure sufficient funding from private sources,’ said organizers in a statement. The CFF also hopes to make a comeback in 2010.

The ski resort for which Mont Tremblant is known was in the news earlier this month following the fatal hillside accident of actress Natasha Richardson.
