Shaftesbury has unveiled a spurt of news in the leadup to the spring MIP season.
Firstly, the Toronto company has acquired Long Story, Short, a new scripted web series written and co-created by Canuck actress Katie Boland, who also stars in the series.
Long Story, Short, co-created, directed and produced by Gail Harvey, follows a 21-year-old woman and her friends in their various exploits and adventures on the road to adulthood.
Each episode of the Toronto-shot series is centered around the “hangover” breakfast, where the friends recap the previous nights’ events.
Shaftesbury is shopping the 11 x five-minute series (which can also be packaged as two half-hours) at MIPCube and MIPTV.
Funded by the Independent Production Fund, Long Story, Short also stars Tommie-Amber Pirie (Michael: Tuesdays & Thursdays), Lauren Collins (Degrassi), Adam Butcher (Republic of Doyle) and Michael Seater (Life with Derek).
Boland, named one of TIFF’s Rising Stars in 2011, recently starred in Ferocious, Sex After Kids and Gerontrophilia.
Boland and Harvey are producers on Long Story, Short. Shaftesbury Sales Company holds all rights to the series.
Secondly, Shaftesbury has also begun production on one-hour documentary Unsung (working title) for TVO.
The documentary, directed and produced by Moze Mossanen (Romeos & Juliets), follows two Toronto high school show choirs battling to create an award-winning routine for the Show Choir Canada Nationals and its $30,000 prize.
The doc, shooting this month in Toronto, will premiere on TVO in the fall. Shaftesbury will also shop Unsung at MIPDoc and MIPTV this week.
Unsung is produced by Shaftesbury in association with TVO, with funding support from the Shaw Rocket Fund, the Canada Media Fund and federal and provincial tax credits. Shaftesbury’s Christina Jennings is exec producer, and Jeff Spiret and Mossanen are producers.
