Two take up residence at NFB

Documentary filmmakers Paule Baillargeon and Philippe Baylaucq have joined the National Film Board as filmmakers in residence. The pair join the board for a two-year term, following a process that saw more than 100 filmmakers apply for the posts.

Baillargeon and Baylaucq ‘will benefit from outstanding creative support so they can push the limits of their art and make possible what would be impossible anywhere outside the NFB,’ said Monique Simard, director general of the NFB’s French Program, in a statement. ‘Our production teams will also benefit from the highly valued and diverse experience of these mentors.’

Simard introduced the program, open to experienced francophone docmakers, following her arrival at the board last summer.

Baillargeon — who has acted in some 30 features including Jesus of Montreal and I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing — has more recently turned to making docs, such as the acclaimed Claude Jutra, portrait sur film in 2002. Baylaucq’s films include the award winners Lodela and Mystère B. , the docs Les couleurs du sang and Sables émouvants and the 2001 musical Hugo et le dragon.
