Equinoxe Films has joined Impact Future Media to produce and distribute a $28 million biopic based on the life story of software guru John McAfee.
The project, with a working title Running in the Background, follows McAfee in fall 2012 entrusting Montreal-based Impact Future Media with the exclusive intellectual property rights to his story.
That move came as McAfee was on the lam in Belize, pursued by the police in the wake of a murder of his neighbour, also an American expatriate.
McAfee under the glare of the world media fled the country and is now back living in the U.S.
The Running in the Background project will begin with McAfee’s childhood and continue through to current day as it reveals new details about his life.
“John McAfee has entrusted us with his life story, and it was essential that we find the right partners to help bring this quality project to the big screen,” said François Garcia, producer and co-founder of Impact Future Media, in a statement.
“Equinoxe Films is a natural fit for us, and we are excited to be collaborating with them on this incredible story,” he added.
Michael Mosca of Equinoxe Films is a veteran film producer and distributor, with his recent projects including Winnie, the Winnie Mandela biopic.
Mosca and Francesca Visconti will produce the film with Impact Future Media under Equinoxe’s production arm Starling Road Productions.
Equinoxe will also handle distribution in Canada.
