Lionsgate has unveiled yet another output deal, this time with Russia’s West Company.
The deal disclosed Wednesday encompasses not only Russia but the other nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.
The pact comes in the wake of a blockbuster opening in the region of Lionsgate unit Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. The film is distributed by West Company in that locale, where it grossed a franchise-best $22 million in its opening weekend in that territory. Lionsgate says it was the best non-holiday opening day in the territory’s history and the second biggest opening in the territory all time for any film.
It drew three million admissions in its opening weekend, more than any other film in the territory’s history.
West Company has previously partnered with Lionsgate on titles such as What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Possession and Silent Hill 2 and with Summit on the distribution of the Twilight and Step Up franchises, among other titles.
The deal with West Company is the latest in a series of international output deals unveiled by Lionsgate throughout 2012. It was hammered out by Lionsgate’s senior VP of international, Crystal Bourbeau, and Maitreya Yasuda, Lionsgate’s executive VP of international contracts and legal affairs.
Lionsgate noted Summit Entertainment will maintain a longstanding output agreement with Central Partnership in the CIS. Lionsgate acquired Summit in January 2012, but the Lionsgate and Summit labels continue to operate on a separate basis.
Lionsgate is incorporated in British Columbia but is operated mainly out of its Santa Monica office.
