CFC’s REEL Challenge seeks comedic and animated projects

The Canadian Film Centre has opened the fourth annual round of its REEL Challenge, a contest which offers aspiring filmmakers the chance to showcase their work while also raising the profile of the screen-entertainment production industry.

The contest opened Tuesday and runs until Feb. 15, 2013. In this year’s iteration, which the CFC has dubbed Take 4, the centre is seeking films in two categories: comedic and animated shorts. The winning filmmaker in each category will receive $7,500.

Submissions must be at most 60 seconds and can be either presented film-style or as a PSA.

Last year’s winners were: Gerald Patrick Fantone from Toronto, who won a $10,000 first prize for his short, This Film, that looked at the numerous people required to bring a film production to life; Alex Sikorsky from Toronto, who took the $3,000 second place prize for the PSA short film Superheroes; and Jesse Ewles of Toronto, who took the $2,000 third place prize for Film Truck.
