Frauke Sandig and Eric Black’s Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth (pictured) took the honour for best international feature at the Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival’s awards ceremony on Sunday night (Oct. 14).

The film follows six indigenous Maya in Mexico as they try to preserve their culture and environment.

The best international short film honour went to Giannina Lasalvia’s Hot & Bothered, a climate change comedy in which a husband and wife try to find solutions to achieving intimacy in the midst of a heat wave.

Other winners included Velcrow Ripper’s Occupy Love, which was named best Canadian feature. In it, Ripper took his camera to various Occupy protests around the world, in search of love stories emerging within the activism.

The best Canadian short film award went to Faroe Des Roches and Ryan Vandecasteyen’s The Pipedreams Project, which follows the duo as they kayak along the British Columbian coastline and come into contact with communities contending with plans for an oil pipeline.

Honourable mentions for best Canadian feature and Best Canadian short film went to Lost Rivers from Caroline Bâcle and Spoke from Lulu Wei, respectively.

The Mark Haslam Award, presented in honor of the festival’s founder, went to Richard Boyce’s Rainforest: The Limits of Splendour; while Emily James’ Just Do It: A Tale of Modern Day Outlaws got the honourable mention.

The Green Pitch Award winner was Amanda Strong’s Honey for Sale, which claimed a prize valued at $10,000 through cash and services provided by CBC’s ‘Nature of Things,’ PS Production Services, Fearless Films, Precision Transfer, Wallace Studios, Source Shop and Vistek.

The Green Screen Award, sponsored by Astral’s Harold Greenberg Fund and given to a production that has reduced its environmental footprint, went to Syfy series Warehouse 13, with the runner-up being In Organic We Trust from Kiplin Pastor.

The 13th edition of the Planet in Focus festival wrapped took place from Oct. 10-14.
