Montreal-based director Caroline Bâcle’s documentary Lost Rivers will open the 13th annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival in Toronto.
The film, which won the festival’s 2010 Green Pitch Award, is produced by Katarina Soukup and explores the history of the many rivers that were hidden beneath cities during the industrial revolution.
In a statement, the festival’s artistic director Kathleen Mullen said the film “brings to life an important aspect of urban ecology, the communities of ‘drainers’ that explore these underground rivers and the international cities that are working to revitalize the rivers and integrate them back into the city landscape.”
Organizers also announced this year’s industry programming, which includes a creative documentary workshop with Canadian Eco Hero honoree Jennifer Baichwal; and panels on fair use, NGO-funded docs, interactive storytelling and green energy. The industry events will take place on October 11 and 12.
Planet in Focus takes place from Oct. 10 to 14, at Toronto’s TIFF Bell Lightbox.
