St. John’s-based director Jordan Canning made it look easy, as her film Not Over Easy nabbed all three jury prizes at the NSI Online Short Film Festival.

The animated silent short, in which a woman daydreams about the happy couple she and her man once were and imagines what their lives would be like as a couple of eggs, took home the $1,250 A&E Short Filmmakers Award and the $750 Bite Comedy Award, and became the first recipient of the $2,500 Shaw Media Fearless Female Director Award.

All told, Canning won $4,500 in prize money.

Elsewhere, Alex Epstein’s You Are So Undead earned the A&E Short Filmmakers Award honourable mention, Jane Thompson’s The Exit scooped up the Fearless Female Director Award honourable mention and Kyle Sanderson’s Lie Down and Die nabbed the Bite Comedy Award honourable mention.

Canning has directed more than a dozen short films and music videos, including Bedroom, which screened at TIFF, and Countdown, which won an NSI Drama Award and a Golden Sheaf for Best Director.

She was also last week announced as the national winner of the RBC Emerging Filmmakers Competition, part of the four-day Talent Lab at the Toronto International Film Festival, for which she received a prize of $15,000 for her film, Seconds.

Not Over Easy was written by Jody Richardson and Jordan Canning, produced by Sam Pryse-Phillips and animated by Mike DeCroock,

It has previously screened at the screen all over the world including Tribeca, Newport Beach, Nantucket and Nashville Film Festivals, and was a finalist in CBC’s Short Film Faceoff 2012.

Canning is currently working on a number of feature-length films, including an adaption of the novel, Come, Thou Tortoise.
