As Toronto producer Montefiore Films lines up a Canadian distributor for Jason Priestley’s Cas & Dylan, Breakthrough Entertainment has acquired the U.S. and international distribution rights to the homegrown comedy scripted by Jessica Gabe.
Priestley’s narrative theatrical directorial debut, which stars Richard Dreyfuss and Tatiana Maslany, starts production from Aug. 20 and shoots to Sept. 25 in Sudbury and Calgary, Alberta.
On the eve of shooting, Breakthrough’s newly-formed film sales division, led by Marina Cordoni, has picked up the foreign distribution rights, excluding Canada.
“Cas & Dylan is a special project for all of us, made so by the brilliant script penned by Jessie Gabe, the exciting combination of stars Richard Dreyfuss and Tatiana Maslany and the theatrical directorial debut of Jason Priestley, who has demonstrated his prowess as a director on a number of major television projects,” Cordoni, vice president of movies for Breakthrough Entertainment, said in a statement.
The Canadian indie follows a dying doctor (Dreyfuss) whose plans to check out on his own terms take a reluctant detour when he inadvertently winds up on the lam with a 22-year-old girl, played by Maslany.
Cas & Dylan received production financing from Telefilm Canada, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, the Alberta Media Development Fund and the Harold Greenberg Fund.
The Montefiore Films production is produced by Mark Montefiore (Picnicface, Eating Buccaneers), with Breakthrough Entertainment serving as executive producers.
Cinematography for Cas & Dylan is by Gerald Packer, editing is by Bridget Durnford and Peter Mihaichuk will handle production design.
Pacific Northwest Pictures will release Cas & Dylan in Canada.
