New TIFF Asian film summit to support deal making

The Toronto International Film Festival will host the Shangri-La Hotel Toronto Asian Film Summit, bringing together production, finance, distribution, exhibition and policy execs in the Asian and western film industries at the Shangri-La Hotel (pictured) in Toronto on Sept. 10.

The announcement came from TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey on Tuesday.

“As both a key launch pad for films in North America and home to huge audiences for Asian cinema, we think Toronto can be a prime meeting place for the Asian and western film industries,” Bailey said in a statement.

“The Shangri-La Hotel Toronto Asian Film Summit is our humble attempt to offer a platform where industry leaders can foster deeper relationships, generate new ideas and find new business opportunities,” he added.

Actor, producer and director Jackie Chan is slated to attend the event as guest of honour, and Motion Picture Association of America chairman and CEO Senator Chris Dodd has also confirmed attendance.

The summit is just the latest in a string of recently announced opportunities to boost Canadian film industry exposure and business prospects in Asia.

In December, the Whistler Film Festival unveiled the China Canada Gateway For Film program, a script competition that will see Canadian writer/producer teams pitch potential movie coproductions to Chinese producers at this year’s festival summit in November.

And in May, the Montreal World Film Festival announced its inaugural China Film Business Week as part of the festival’s film market from Aug. 23 to Sept. 3, an opportunity to encourage future coproductions between Canada, China and other foreign countries.

And last month, the National Film Board of Canada partnered with China’s Phoenix New Media on NFBZone, a Canadian-branded online channel that gives Chinese internet users access to films produced and distributed by the NFB.

The Shangri-La Hotel at 180 University Ave. in downtown Toronto is slated to open this August.

Passes for the summit will be available to industry professionals register with TIFF, and go on sale July 20.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 6 to 16, 2012.
