The Rogers Documentary and Cable Network Fund has awarded $1.1 million in grants to 17 documentary projects, with Ron Mann (pictured) and Bill Imperial’s Altman, and Laura Bari and Sarah Spring’s Ariel among the films receiving money.

The projects are a mixture of English- and French-language, and cover networks including Animal Planet, Canal D, History, Documentary, Vision TV, and Super Channel. The individual amounts granted were not broken out for each film.

As previously reported, Altman is being made for The Movie Network, and will see Canadian director Mann looking at the life of acclaimed American filmmaker Robert Altman.

Ariel, meanwhile, focuses on a man who is rebuilding his body after losing his legs in a terrible accident, and was among the docs to be named as a recipient for the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and Shaw Media’s partnered funds earlier this year.

The Rogers Group of Funds is an initiative under which the Canadian telecoms giant offers three different forms of support to Canadian program-makers.

The Rogers Telefund offers loans to Canadian indie producers; while the Rogers Documentary Fund provides funding for documentary films. The Rogers Cable Network Fund, meanwhile, is an equity investor in Canadian programs that have a first play on a Canadian cable channel.
