The Canadian film industry has had 20 films booked into the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival , including one feature in competition.

Director Micheline Lanctôt’s Pour l’amour de Dieu (For the Love of God) will compete at the Asian festival for the Golden Goblet Award.

Produced by André Gagnon of Montreal’s Lycaon Pictus and Monique Huberdeau of Montréal’s Sherpas Films, the film features characters torn between human love and their relationships with others, and a love of God.

Elsewhere, nine documentaries will compete in the Magnolia International Documentary Awards (MIDA) sidebar, including Jennifer Baichwal’s Payback (NFB) and Gary Marcuse’s Waking the Green Tiger (Face to Face Media).

Also contending are Dianne Whelan’s 40 Days at Base Camp (Rebel Sister Productions); Aaron Yeger’s A People Uncounted (Urbinder Films); Yanik Létourneau’s Les États-Unis d’Afrique (Péripheria Productions, NFB); Joel Heath’s People of a Feather (Sanikiluaq Running Pictures); Steve Suderman’s To Make a Farm (Orangeville Road Pictures); Paule Baillargeon’s Trente tableaux (NFB); and Jay Bajaj’s We Ain’t Rich or Famous but We’re the Happy Pals (Bajaj Film Productions).

Elsewhere, as part of the Focus Canada sidebar under the festival’s International Film Panorama program, Maryanne Zéhil’s La Vallée des larmes (The Valley of Tears), produced by Mia Productions, and Paul Barbeau’s Après la neige (Winter Passed), produced by Reprise Films, will receive their world bows.

And Kirk Caouette’s Hit’n’Strum (4Branch Productions) and Stephen Hayes’ Lucky 7 (Boomerang Films) will receive their international premieres as part of the program.

In all, ten Canadian films will screen in the Focus Canada program, also including Martin Donovan’s Collaborator (U.S. co-venture produced by Dviant Films and This is That Productions); Leonard Farlinger’s I’m Yours (New Real Films); Nicholas Kinsey’s Killing Ruth – The Snuff Dialogues (Cinegraphe Productions); Gabriel Pelletier’s La Peur de l’eau (Go Films); Ivan Grbovic’s Romeo Onze (Reprise Films) and Charles-Olivier Michaud’s Sur le rythme (Christal Films).

The Shanghai International Film Festival runs June 16 to June 24.
