Cannes has booked the short film Avec Jeff, à moto (pictured), from Quebec director Marie-Ève Juste, into the Directors’ Fortnight independent sidebar.
The film, from Montreal-based Voyous Films, was produced by Ménaïc Raoul and Gabrielle Tougas-Fréchette.
Also booked into the Directors’ Fortnight program is Mexico-Canada co-production Fogo, from Mexican director Yulene Olaizola.
The feature-length film was shot on Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador as part of the Fogo Arts Residency Program.
The two films are in the running for the Camerea d’Or prize, which is awarded to the best first film shown in either the Official Selection, Directors’ Fortnight or International Critics’ Week.
The prestigious prize will be presented at the festival’s closing ceremony.
The 2012 Fortnight selection, announced Tuesday morning at a Paris press conference by the sidebar’s new artistic director, Edouard Waintrop, comprises 21 features and 10 shorts.
The non-competitive showcase was created by the French Directors Guild to boost filmmaker profiles and present an eclectic mix of features, shorts and docs to audiences and critics alike.
The Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 17 to May 27 in Paris.
