U.S.-based distributor Zeitgeist has picked up U.S. rights for China Heavyweight, the latest feature doc from Montreal-based prodco EyeSteel Film.

The film follows the story of Qi Moxiang, a master boxing coach in southwestern China and the boys and girls he trains to become Western-style boxing champions. Along the way, the students must decide if they wish to fight for their country as Olympians and amateurs, or if they wish to pursue their own personal careers as professionals.

Zeitgeist was the U.S. distributor for two of EyeSteelFilm’s previous docs – Up the Yangtze from director Yung Chang and Last Train Home from Lixin Fan.

Zeitgeist co-presidents Nancy Gerstman and Emily Russo said in a joint statement that they have “been overwhelmed by the young, brilliant filmmakers who are dedicated to bringing out the complexities of China during this turbulent time. Yung and Lixin and EyeSteel have been some of the best people we’ve ever worked with.”

“After the success of Last Train Home and Yung Chang’s Up the Yangtze, we’re extremely pleased to be working with the wonderful team from Zeitgeist Films once again,” added EyeSteel producer Bob Moore.

A theatrical release for this summer is planned.
