Guy Georgeson wants to see the Coolest Thing in the House

Home design as a theme for the web series Coolest Thing in the House is a natural for veteran TV editor Guy Georgeson, whose editor credits at RTR Media include HGTV’s Summer Home.

The online series about fascinating objects in people’s homes, culminating in a single “coolest thing”, has Georgeson producing, directing, editing and funding the project on his own.

He uses his own DSLR camera and 50 mm lens, plus lighting and sound gear he purchased, along with paying for licenses for the music used in the episodes, which each run just under two minutes. His crew includes his wife, who does some of the camera work, and a camera assist friend who helps with lighting and sound on weekends.

“A lot of online video content is poorly done – bad lighting, horrible sound, and way too long, so I wanted to put something together that was close to the quality of the HGTV shows that I’d been editing for years, and wanted to see if it could be done on a tiny little budget,” he says.

Georgeson adds that a web series is a good match for the simple concept.

“It would be hard to sustain a 30-minute show with someone who is not a host or without narration driving the story,” he says, adding, “[with this concept], it’s much easier to direct and edit with a non-professional and have them come off looking natural.”

The show, which has accumulated almost 2,000 views through its YouTube channel within the first two days of launch, is being promoted through Twitter, Facebook and a website.

And Georgeson hopes the web series will connect with viewers as it gets them thinking about the prized objects in their own homes.

With seven episodes in the can, the web series producer plans to release a new episode every Wednesday.
