Three Canadian film sound engineers are joining the awards race, as nominees for the 48th Annual Cinema Audio Society Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing.

Craig Berkey of Vancouver, Paul Massey of Toronto, and David Giammarco of Welland, ON, are all nominated as re-recording mixers.

Berkey, born in Burnaby, B.C., is nominated for Hanna. He was last year nominated for two Oscars for the Coen brothers’ True Grit, in the sound editing and sound mixing categories. In 2008, he received an Oscar nom for sound mixing in another Coen brothers film, No Country for Old Men.

Massey, who is London, England-born and Toronto-bred, is up for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Giammarco is nominated for Moneyball.

Massey and Giammaro shared an Oscar nomination in sound mixing for 3:10 to Yuma in 2008.

The CAS awards will be presented on Feb. 18 at a sealed envelope dinner in the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in L.A.

The CAS, a non-profit and philanthropic organization, was founded in 1964, with the mandate to share information with sound professionals in the film and TV industries.
