Wingin’ It takes flight with 2011 Shaw Rocket Prize

Toronto-based Temple Street Productions has won The Shaw Rocket Prize for Family Channel’s Wingin’ It.

The winner of the $50,000 prize was announced Thursday night in Ottawa.

The prize is awarded annually to the best independently produced Canadian children’s, youth or family program. International jurors and Canadian children in every province voted on the winner.

Wingin’ It takes the recognizable setting of high school, mixes it with the everyday challenges of young people coming to terms with growing up, and twists it with a little bit of magic to create stories which are engaging and above all great fun,” said Michael Carrington, a member of the international jury and chief content officer (Europe, Middle East and Africa) of Turner Broadcasting.

“Being selected by top industry experts, and then confirmed by a jury of child viewers – the hardest critics of all! – is a testament to the true popularity and success of this program,” said Jason Kenney, minister of citizenship, immigration and multiculturalism, who presented the award, in a statement.

Wingin’ It airs on Astral’s Family Channel and Disney XD, and is distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide. Family Channel ordered up a third season for 2011/2012, which commenced production in August.

The show follows the adventures of Porter Jackson (played by Demetrius Joyette), a 16-year-old Angel-in-Training, tasked with transforming regular high schooler Carl Montclaire (played by Dylan Everett) into the most popular kid at Bennett High in order to get his wings.
