Canadians take a bite out of Shark Week

Canadians can’t get enough of Discovery’s toothy creatures, as evidenced by an audience of 5.5 million (2+) tuning into some or all of Shark Week last week, turning it into the most-watched themed week for Discovery Channel Canada in its 16 years running.

The 5.5 million includes 2.6 million 25- to 54-year-olds and 2.5 million 18- to 49-year-olds.

Primetime audiences saw a 45% spike in 2+ and 18-to-49 demos, as well as a 64% jump in the 25-to-54 demo over to last year.

“Shark Week has always been ‘appointment viewing’ for so many Discovery viewers,” said Ken MacDonald, Discovery’s VP of programming, in a statement. “It performed better than ever across each day and each time slot.”

The popular themed week also saw the largest single-day success in its entire run with two million viewers tuning in on July 30 for the week’s launch with back-to-back specials Great White Invasion and Jaws Comes Home.

Jaws Comes Home saw the highest single-ep audience ever during the week, in key demos 2+ (467,000), 25 to 54 (258,000), and 18 to 49 (245,000).
