Indie distributor Phase 4 Films has acquired the Canadian rights to writer/director Kevin Smith’s Red State, and plans a country-wide theatrical release in the coming months.

The deal, unveiled in Cannes, follows Red State bowing at Sundance earlier this year.

“I love Canada – it’s a special country with some of the greatest people you¹ll ever meet, so I am incredibly pleased to have found a like-minded distributor in Phase 4 who is keen on bringing the film to audiences across the Great White North in what we are calling our “Red Province Tour,” Smith, a long-time Degrassi TV series fan, said in a statement.

The movie portrays a group of American teens who receive an online invitation for sex, and stars Michael Parks, John Goodman (pictured), Melissa Leo and Kyle Gallner.

The distribution deal was hammered out by Larry Greenberg for Phase 4, and Cinetic Media’s John Sloss and D2 Films’ David Dinerstein acting for the filmmakers.

In other Cannes market news, Mongrel Media has picked up the Canadian rights to the Israeli horror film Rabies from first-time directors Navot Papushado and film critic Aharon Keshales and XYZ Films.

The slasher-in-the-woods film, which stars Lior Ashkenazi and Ania Bukstein, features a group of teens stalked and hunted down in a deserted nature reserve.

The Israeli film bowed at Tribeca as part of its Cinemania sidebar.
