Banff cheers for Beers

Veteran reality TV producer Thom Beers is to receive an excellence in non-fiction award at the upcoming Banff World Media Festival, organizers said Thursday.

Beers, CEO and executive producer of Original Productions, a FremantleMedia subsidiary, is best known for his Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, IRT: Deadliest Roads and Black Gold series.

In all, Beers has developed around 40 series for cable channels, including History, Discovery, Spike TV, The National Geographic Channel, truTV and A&E.

“Since founding Original Productions, Thom Beers has continually reinvented reality television with one international hit after another,” Ferne Cohen, Banff executive director, said in explaining the festival’s choice for the unscripted TV award tribute.

While in Banff, Beers will be interviewed on June 13 as part of the festival’s non-fiction stream.
