The Canadian film Frankie & Alice has become an Oscar contender on more lips this awards season after lead Halle Berry signed up as a presenter at the 83rd annual Academy Awards.
Berry, who won an Oscar for her role in Lionsgate’s Monster’s Ball, earlier launched a full Oscar campaign for Frankie & Alice, the drama thriller she stars in and produced along with Toronto-based Access Motion Pictures, Vancouver’s Brightlight Pictures and Reality Pictures in Motion.
The Canadian-financed movie, which portrays Berry as a stripper suffering from a multiple personality disorder, was shot in Vancouver in late 2008.
The Geoffrey Sax-directed picture also stars Chandra Wilson, Stellan Skarsgard, Joey Bothwell and Matt Frewer.
The Halle Berry-starrer screened at Cannes last May and had its Hollywood premiere December 1 at the Egyptian Theatre.
The Canadian film’s pre-Oscar push includes sending out 10,000 screeners to Academy voters and decision-makers, and TV, radio, print, online and outdoor ads for the Dec. 10 qualifying opening in a Los Angeles theater, ahead of a full theatrical release by Freestyle Releasing from February 4.
Berry’s Oscar faces big hurdles, including strong competition in the best actress category this year from Natalie Portman and Annette Bening.
