Long-serving Daily Planet co-host Jay Ingram has announced that he will step down at the end of this season to serve as a contributor to Discovery Channel.

Ingram has led the cornerstone science show for 16 years. He joined Discovery in 1994, after serving as host of CBC Radio science series Quirks and Quarks from 1979 to 1992. Ingram was integral in the launch of Daily Planet on January 1, 2005.

Earlier this year, Ingram added the Order of Canada to his long list of accomplishments and accolades.

“Co-hosting Daily Planet has been an amazing chapter in my career,” said Ingram in a statement. “The show is all about ingenuity, imagination and ‘stick-to-itiveness.’ Whether it’s a backyard inventor or a scientist in a lab, at the core they’re all the same. Telling their stories and sharing their drive and passion is what’s made Daily Planet so compelling for our audience – and for me – for the last 15 seasons. Stepping down as full-time co-host will give me greater time and flexibility to find new ways to share the world’s most compelling science stories.”

Details of Ingram’s new role at Discovery have not been released.
