CCI Entertainment and Teletoon are tapping into the five million active members on geocaching.com for its latest game and TV series GeoFreakZ.
The two have inked a deal with the site’s parentco Groundspeak to integrate the GPS-based treasure hunt with the kids property, set to launch on Teletoon and Teletoon.com in spring 2011. GeoFreakZ targets kids seven to 12, offering social networking with games, including (naturally) a geocaching game.
To play, users log in to the site where they’re given the approximate location of hidden caches that they then have to find using a GPS-enabled device. Users can take items from the cache, replacing with another item for the next hunters to find.
“It’s a new way of thinking about cross-platform integration,” says CCI co-chair Charles Falzon in a statement. “Our partnership with Groundspeak and geocaching.com will further this connection and provide endless opportunities to connect the online and on-screen worlds to the real life adventure sport.”
The deal means that those registered on geocaching.com can automatically earn bonus points and unique virtual prizes in the GeoFreakZ game.
The brand includes 44 animated minisodes featuring teenage geocaching aliens, offering viewers clues that lead to virtual prizes in the online game. CCI is also developing live events, including a traveling GeoFreakZ Academy and special promotions.
