Hot Sheet: The Handmaid’s Tale leaps in demand with final season

HBO’s The Last of Us landed at No. 3 on the overall TV originals chart following its season two release.

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale led demand on the digital originals chart in early April following the premiere of its sixth and final season on April 8.

The series, available on Crave, Prime Video and illic0+ in Canada, was 42.8 times more in demand than the average television show during the week of April 7 to 13, according to Parrot Analytics.

The Handmaid’s Tale (pictured) is based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name. Both versions are set in a dystopian U.S. where women are forced into child-bearing servitude.

Atwood’s 2019 sequel, The Testaments, has been picked up by Hulu with the series entering production on April 7, according to a post on the streaming platform’s Facebook page.

HBO’s second season of the apocalyptic The Last of Us, available on Crave in Canada, also made its debut on the Hot Sheet following its release. The show, based on the video game The Last of Us Part II, landed at No. 3 on the overall TV show chart with a demand average of 44. The Last of Us‘ second season released on April 13.

Back on the digital originals chart, Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again and Invincible were both bumped down one spot compared to the prior week due to The Handmaid’s Tale‘s rise. The two series had demand averages of 42.5 and 38.3, respectively.

At No.4 is Netflix’s Black Mirror, another series which recently had a season premiere. The anthology series recorded a demand average of 34.8. Its seventh season released on April 10.

HBO’s The White Lotus, also available on Crave, remained as the overall demand leader and even saw its demand average climb to 87.6 from its total the previous week of 80.1. The White Lotus had its season three finale air on April 6.

Parrot Analytics calculates its Top 10 lists using Demand Expressions, which are shown by using a metric that demonstrates how much more in-demand the top series are than the average TV show (linear, pay TV, SVOD and AVOD) in Canada. For example, a difference of 1x represents the market average and 10x means a series is 10 times more in demand than the average TV show in this market. Demand is defined as the total audience demand being expressed for a title within a market. Audience demand reflects the desire, engagement and viewership, weighted by importance; thus, a stream or download is a higher expression of demand than a “like” or comment.
