David Cronenberg will return to familiar ground when he shoots his next movie, an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 2003 novel Cosmopolis, in Toronto next spring.
“We’re talking April 4 (2011) in Toronto,” Cronenberg, who will be introducing his 1983 movie Videodrome to a student and public audience on Thursday at Bell Lightbox, told Playback Daily on Wednesday.
The Manhattan-set Cosmopolis has been spearheaded by Portuguese producer Paolo Branco of Alfames Filmes, and already has Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard on board, with the financing virtually completed.
The indie pic portrays a multi-billionaire fund manager spending an entire day trying to get across Manhattan in a stretch limo for a haircut, only to end up losing his wealth.
And much as Cronenberg has made no secret of his intention to shoot one of his pictures at Pinewood Toronto Studios, whether Cosmopolis goes onto one of its cavernous soundstages will depend on price.
“I was excited to see Pinewood when it was unveiled, and was involved in the introduction to the press,” the veteran Canadian director said.
“But when we start to consider it (Pinewood), it will be business as usual. They will have to make a deal we can afford. It will be up for grabs, in the normal course of negotiation,” Cronenberg added.
The History of Violence and Eastern Promises director also expressed excitement over screening his body-horror movie Videodrome at Bell Lightbox.
Cronenberg said he only toured Bell Lightbox when it was under construction, and before he went to Germany earlier this year to shoot A Dangerous Method, with Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightley starring.
And the director insists he hasn’t viewed Videodrome, which was also shot in Toronto, since he completed the picture nearly three decades ago.
“I hope I can remember stuff. That’s how it is with my films. I don’t particularly like looking at my old movies,” Cronenberg said.
