The Screen Composers Guild of Canada (SCGC) has announced that Oscar-winning Canadian Composer Mychael Danna (Life of Pi; pictured) will be the first recipient of its lifetime achievement award.
The SCGC Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a composer or composing team whose work has made a lasting impact on Canadian culture and their community.
Danna will receive the award at the third annual Canadian Screen Music Awards (CASMA) held on Sept. 25 at the El Mocambo in Toronto.
Working as a composer for more than 40 years, Danna is known for collaborating with Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan including 1987’s Family Viewing and, most recently, 2023’s Seven Veils.
Outside of his Oscar win for Life of Pi, Danna’s work has also been recognized by the Golden Globes and the Canadian Screen Awards.
“Mychael is one of Canada’s finest, most creative and accomplished composers, and the perfect recipient of our inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award,” said John Welsman, SCGC president, in a statement. “His celebrated work has blazed a trail for Canadian screen composing and continues to inspire everyone in our industry.”
