The 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will open with David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers (pictured) on Sept. 5, and close with Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut The Deb on Sept. 15.
Both films will world premiere as Gala presentations at Roy Thompson Hall.
Green’s U.S. film Nutcrackers (Rough House Pictures, Red Hour Productions, Rivulet Films) follows a strait-laced and work-obsessed man (Ben Stiller) as he is suddenly thrust into being a caregiver for his rambunctious, orphaned nephews.
The film is produced by Nate Meyer, Rob Paris and Mike Witherill. Executive producers include Kelley Sims, Rick Steele and Atilla Salih Yucer, while Randall Ehrmann is a coproducer. Rights are currently available from UTA Independent Film Group.
Rebel Wilson’s Australian comedy The Deb (Bunya Productions, Camp Sugar Production, Unigram) is an original musical comedy about two teenage cousins who dig deep to find self-acceptance and a date to the Debutante Ball in a small country town in Australia.
The film’s producers include Wilson, Len Blavatnik, David Jowsey, Greer Simpkin, Amanda Ghost and Gregory Cameron. The executive producers are Vince Holden, Danny Cohen, and Meg Washington. Matt Reeder is a coproducer. The film rights are available from WME.
Wilson sparked controversy when she took to social media last week accusing producers Ghost, Cameron and Holden of embezzling funds from the film’s budget. The producers have since launched a defamation suit against Wilson, according to several U.S. reports.
TIFF runs from Sept. 5 to 15.
