Heartland showrunner Mark Haroun (pictured) received the top prize at the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) Screenwriting Awards.
The winners of the 28th annual awards were announced at a gala ceremony on Monday (May 13) at the Koerner Hall in Toronto.
Haroun, who also serves as executive producer on the long-running CBC drama, won the Showrunner Award. Heartland is produced by Dynamo Films and SEVEN24 Films.
Crave and APTN lumi limited series Little Bird (Rezolution Pictures, Original Pictures) won the Drama Series award for Zoe Hopkins for the episode “Bineshi Kwe.”
The Comedy Series honour went to Workin’ Moms (Wolf + Rabbit Entertainment) writer Enuka Okuma for the episode “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” of the CBC original series.
The Feature Film category had two winners: Dan Gordon for the Canada-Poland copro Irena’s Vow (Entract Studios, Darius Films, K&K film selekt); and Jonas Chernick and Diana Frances for The Burning Season (Banana-Moon Sky Films)
The MOW and Miniseries award went to Marie Clements for CBC’s Bones of Crows (Marie Clements Media, Screen Siren Pictures, Grana Productions). Clements won the award for the episode “To Be Here.”
Suzanne Bolch and John May won the Preschool award for Peacock’s Superbuns (Yowza Animation), for the episode “The Sweet Sound of Christmas,” while the Tweens and Teens award went to YTV’s Popularity Papers (Aircraft Pictures, WexWorks Media) writer Jeff Detsky for the episode “Pain in the Bat Mitzvah.”
Ravi Steve Khajuria won the Shorts award for the digital series I Willy Bury You (Number’d Company Pictures) for the episode “Depression.”
The award ceremony was hosted by Jessica Holmes, known for her work in The Holmes Show, Royal Canadian Air Farce and The Communist’s Daughter. Awards presenters included writer and producer Ken Craw (Heartland); writer, producer and director Sasha Leigh Henry (Bria Mack Gets A Life); actor Malaika Hamadi (Bria Mack Gets A Life); and actor, writer and producer Andrew Phung (Run the Burbs).
