Inside Out reveals full lineup for 34th edition

Two domestic documentaries and one digital series will make their world bow, while Karen Knox's We Forgot To Break Up will close the festival.

Two Canadian documentaries and one digital series are making their world premiere at the 34th edition of Inside Out this month.

The Inside Out Toronto 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival unveiled its full lineup on Friday (May 3), which includes 106 feature and short films from 25 countries.

Among the Canadian world premieres is the KindaTV series Stories From My Gay Grandparents (pictured), created by Scott Farley and Perrie Voss.

The 10 x 10-minute series follows an older couple who seek help from their grandchildren as they come to terms with their sexuality. It is produced by Andrew McCann Smith of Play Media and all episodes are directed by J Stevens.

The other two Canadian world premieres are two documentaries: Unusually Normal, which is written, directed and produced by Toronto filmmaker Colette Johnson-Vosberg and follows three generations of lesbians in a single family; and Bulletproof: A Lesbian’s Guide to Surviving the Plot, which followers writer-director-producer Regan Latimer as she undertakes a personal and immersive exploration of queer representation on television.

Inside Out will open with U.S. film My Old Ass, directed by Lindsay, Ont.-born director Megan Park. The film was shot in Ontario and debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and acquired by Amazon MGM Studios shortly after. It tells the story of a girl who is warned by her older self to never fall in love.

Closing the festival is the Canadian premiere of We Forgot To Break Up from Toronto director Karen Knox. The film is produced by Motel Pictures and is based on the novel Heidegger Stairwell by Kayt Burgess, adapted for the screen by Noel Baker, Zoe Whittall and Pat Mills. It tells the story of a band of misfits who head to the city to make their indie rock dreams come true. Northern Banner Releasing is the distributor.

Rounding out the Canadian films in the lineup are Canada/U.K. copro Close to You, directed by Dominic Savage and starring and produced by Elliot Page; documentary nanekawâsis from director Conor McNally, which is making its world premiere at Vancouver’s DOXA next week; and HighballTV narrative film Mother Father Sister Brother Frank from director Caden Douglas.

The other world premieres at the festival are two U.S. narrative features: Sisters from Toronto-born director Susie Yankou and Spark, directed by Nicholas Giuricich.

“We are honoured and humbled that Inside Out continues to provide a space for celebration of 2SLGBTQ+ stories, a space for professional development opportunities for queer creators, and a space to share experiences and network so that we can help foster future creative collaborations with our alumni and future alumni,” said co-head and artistic director Andrew Murphy in a statement.

“Through our ever-evolving creative pipeline from the inception of an idea, to development, to financing to exhibition of a dream realized on screen, we are ecstatic to host a fantastic lineup of films and key industry programming including our third free Industry Day as well as our eighth edition of the B2B Finance Forum where, since 2017, we have seen a success rate of over 40% of participating projects, including this year’s Sundance hit Sebastian,” he continued.

Inside Out runs from May 24 to June 1.
