CBC unveils spring/summer podcast slate

The lineup includes a podcast on a 2015 curling scandal, produced by Vancouver's Kelly & Kelly and Ed Helms' Pacific Electric Pictures.

CBC has unveiled its spring/summer podcast slate, which includes six titles ranging from in-depth investigations into scandals and scams to global politics and personal storytelling.

Among the titles is Broomgate: A Curling Scandal, produced by Vancouver’s Kelly & Kelly and Ed Helms and Mike Falbo’s U.S. banner Pacific Electric Pictures. The six-episode podcast looks at a 2015 controversy in the sport of curling and is hosted by semi-professional curler and comedian John Cullen. The podcast launches on May 6 and is produced for CBC and Universal Studio Group’s USG Audio.

In Split Screen: Kid Nation, produced by U.K-based Vespucci, journalist Josh Gwynn looks at the 2007 reality kids TV show Kid Nation, which based its premise on the book Lord of the Flies. The show was cancelled soon after its debut, igniting a debate about the ethics of reality TV. The podcast launched on CBC Listen and the CBC Podcasts YouTube channel earlier this month.

The four-episode podcast Modi’s India: Understood follows CBC’s South Asia correspondent Salimah Shivji as she delves into the world of Indian politics and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The podcast will launch on May 13.

In The $6 Billion Gold Scam, host Suzanne Wilton takes listeners from the jungles of Indonesia to small town Alberta, in a nine-episode investigation on the biggest goldmine fraud of all time. The $6 Billion Gold Scam is produced by BBC Scotland Productions for CBC and BBC World Service and will debut on May 19.

Come by Chance, produced by U.K.-based Novel, follows the story of two men in Newfoundland and Labrador who discover a more than 50-year-old secret and that changes their world. Spanning seven episodes, Come by Chance is hosted by reporter Luke Quinton and will launch on June 4.

Tested, which launches on July 15, rounds out the slate. The six-episode podcast traces the 100-year history of sex testing in elite sports through the eyes of Christine Mboma, an Olympic silver medalist from Namibia, and Maximila Imali, who holds Kenyan national records.

CBC’s ongoing podcasts include Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud, Crime Story and The Dose, among others.
