To Kill a Tiger, Eternal Spring among Peabody doc nominees

The Peabody Awards announced nominees for documentary, news, public service, radio and podcast on Tuesday.

Canadian films To Kill a Tiger and Eternal Spring are among the documentaries nominated for the 84th Peabody Awards.

To Kill a Tiger is written and directed by Toronto’s Nisha Pahuja and follows the journey of a father in a small Indian village who fights for justice after his 13-year-old daughter is sexually assaulted by three men.

The Hindi-language film was nominated for Documentary Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards earlier this year. It is produced by Cornelia Principe and Pahuja for Notice Pictures and David Oppenheim for the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).

Eternal Spring is written and directed by Jason Loftus and mixes 3D animation with live-action footage to recreate the moment when members of the spiritual group Falun Gong hacked a state TV signal in China.

The Mandarin-language film is produced by Loftus under his banner Lofty Sky Entertainment alongside Yvan Pinard and Kevin Koo. Masha Loftus is an executive producer.

Eternal Spring has garnered several accolades since it hit the festival circuit, winning the audience award at the 2022 Hot Docs festival, as well as the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Rockies Gala at the Banff World Media Festival. The film was Canada’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.

The Peabody Awards celebrate excellence in storytelling in media that touch on important social issues of the day. The nominees for documentary, news, public service, radio and podcast were announced Tuesday (April 23), with the entertainment, children/youth, and arts, interactive and immersive to be announced on Thursday (April 25).

The films join 12 other documentaries nominated in 2024, including the Apple TV+ documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, about the Edmonton-born actor and activist. Nominees are determined by unanimous vote from the board of jurors.
