Networks band to battle cancer

Canadian broadcasters are a competitive bunch.

But as they did in 2008 with the first Stand Up to Cancer telethon, Citytv, CTV and Global Television will each give one hour of commercial-free airtime next Friday to simulcast the second installment of the U.S. network cancer benefit.

Canadian networks acting as one compassionate entity will broadcast a host of Hollywood stars, including George Clooney, Will Smith, Gwyneth Paltrow and Denzel Washington, entertaining or answering the phone for medical research dollars.

And Canadians will have their own chance to ring in and donate to local cancer cure efforts.

The telethon, to air at 8 p.m. on September 10, will also stream live online at Citytv.com, CTV.ca, and GlobalTV.com.
